Angel (2021) is a one-of-a-kind free-standing sculptural work by New Zealand artist John Allen — and one of the artist’s own favourite pieces in the collection. Handcrafted from pōhutukawa root salvaged from a fallen tree at Andersons Bay, Northland, and mounted on a steel base, this sculpture does something remarkable: it looks like it is flying.
The natural form of the root creates a graceful, lyrical silhouette — wings outstretched, body lifted, caught in a moment of effortless ascent. There is nothing forced in this reading; the shape arrived that way, drawn out of the wood by the artist’s eye and hand. Finished with natural oil and wax, the surface reveals the warmth and grain of pōhutukawa while the steel base anchors the form with quiet precision, allowing the wood above to seem almost weightless.
To live with Angel is to have something in the room that lifts the spirit — an original artwork of grace, movement, and enduring presence. Entirely unique, it is an exceptional gift for someone truly special.
