Essence 10 (2025) is a one-of-a-kind sculptural work by New Zealand artist John Allen, and one of the most distinctive pieces in the Essence series. Uniquely, this sculpture brings together two timbers from two separate Auckland locations — native pōhutukawa root from a fallen tree in Glendowie, and oak from a fallen tree in Parnell — united into a single, expressive form.
The pairing of these two woods creates a quiet dialogue between different textures, grains, and tones, each timber contributing its own character to the whole. Finished with natural oil and wax, the surface is warm and tactile, inviting close attention to the contrasts and connections within the piece.
Essence 10 offers a lasting alternative to the fleeting — an original artwork made from reclaimed Auckland timber that symbolises union, contrast, and the beauty of things brought together. Entirely unique, this handcrafted sculpture is a deeply personal and considered gift for someone special.
Available for viewing at Turua Gallery, St Heliers, Auckland.
