Essence 17 (2025) is a one-of-a-kind sculptural work by New Zealand artist John Allen, celebrating connection through material, place, and form. Handcrafted from pōhutukawa burl sourced from a fallen tree at McKenzie Cove, Northland, set upon a pōhutukawa root base salvaged from St Heliers, this piece brings together two coastal origins into a single, balanced composition.

Burl is among the most prized of all timber forms — dense, richly figured, and full of swirling grain patterns formed by the tree’s response to stress or injury. Here, the burl’s intricate character contrasts with the grounded strength of the root base, creating a form that feels both intimate and enduring. Finished with natural oil and wax, the surface reveals the depth, warmth, and distinctive character of pōhutukawa, allowing the timber’s natural history to remain present.

Essence 17 offers a lasting alternative to the fleeting — an original artwork made from reclaimed New Zealand native wood that symbolises connection, resilience, and time. Entirely unique, this handcrafted sculpture is a personal and thoughtful gift for someone truly special.
