Essence 17 (2025) is a one-of-a-kind sculptural work that makes a meaningful gift, celebrating connection through material, place, and form. Handcrafted from pōhutukawa burl sourced from a fallen tree in McKenzie Cove, Northland, and a pōhutukawa root base salvaged from St Heliers, this piece brings together two coastal origins into a single, balanced composition.
The dense, richly grained burl contrasts with the grounded strength of the root base, creating a form that feels both intimate and enduring. Finished with natural oil and wax, the surface reveals the depth, warmth, and distinctive character of pōhutukawa, allowing the timber’s natural history to remain present.
An artwork made from reclaimed New Zealand native wood that symbolises connection, resilience, and time. Each sculpture is entirely unique, making it a personal and thoughtful expression of love.
