"Essence 9" 2025

Essence 9 (2025) is a one-of-a-kind sculptural work by New Zealand artist John Allen, and one of the most distinctive pieces in the Essence series. Handcrafted from pōhutukawa roots salvaged from fallen trees in Northland, the sculpture features an engraved spiral motif filled with gilder’s paste — a detail that sets it apart from every other piece in the collection.

The spiral, an ancient symbol of growth, continuity, and transformation from Newgrange in Ireland, is engraved directly into the surface of the wood and brought to life with the warm metallic lustre of gilder’s paste. It creates a quiet focal point that rewards close attention, adding a layer of intention and craft to the already expressive root form.

Finished with natural oil, the surface reveals the warmth and grain of pōhutukawa while the spiral accent introduces a moment of luminosity. Compact in scale yet rich in detail, Essence 9 is a deeply personal and considered gift — an original artwork that carries meaning at every level.
