A pohutukawa root of extraordinary delicacy — from a fallen tree at Beachlands. It was an incongruous scene where I found it - a massive pohutukawa tree on its side, about 4 metres in diameter, all roots exposed. And in amongst the mighty roots a tiny tiny little off-shoot, tucked in underneath, protected.
This is the finest root I have ever worked on. I almost didn’t touch it. It felt too fragile, too impossibly fine. I took the bark off slowly. Sanded it. And there they were: five heart shapes, hidden inside the twists and turns of a single root. Marvellous.
Life Force: 5 Hearts is a reminder of the presence of the life force in everything, great and small.
