Life Force: Together (2026) is a sculptural work by New Zealand artist John Allen. Several arms of pōhutukawa root from a fallen tree in Northland meet at a shared centre and open outward. Their individual curves remain distinct, while together they form a single, connected shape. The base is Greek limestone bearing the ancient Newgrange spiral.
The Life Force works speak to the unseen energy that animates living things: the pulse that moves through form and connects the visible and invisible. In this sculpture, separate lines gather around one centre, creating a sense of presence and movement without losing their individuality.
Coming together here does not mean becoming the same. Each arm keeps its own direction, while its relationship to the others makes the whole. The Newgrange spiral beneath brings the eye back to the shared base.
Finished with natural oil and wax.
