Life Force Lamp 5 (2024) is a sculptural work by New Zealand artist John Allen — a floor lamp of extraordinary presence and movement. A pōhutukawa root from a fallen tree in Beachlands twists and arcs upward before extending its arm to suspend a small pendant light. It is both sculpture and light source.
The Life Force works speak to the unseen energy that animates all living things — the deep pulse that unites the visible and invisible, the personal and the universal. It is both what gives form and what moves through it. When a sculpture carries life force well, it creates a subtle but powerful exchange: of presence, aliveness, form and flow as one, simplicity and inner calm.
Paired with a Waikato river rock as its base, and fitted with a warm 12v LED light, the piece animates any space with organic form and a gentle, living glow. A reading chair. An open book. A dog. The piece does not decorate a space; it animates it. It is finished with natural oil and wax.
Available for viewing at Turua Gallery, St Heliers, Auckland.
