"Meteor" 2020

Meteor (2020) is a one-of-a-kind wall work by New Zealand artist John Allen. Handcrafted from puriri driftwood collected at Langs Beach, Northland, this piece captures the dynamic energy of its name — a form in motion, suspended in light, caught between the wall and the air in front of it.

Puriri is one of New Zealand’s most ancient and revered native trees, and driftwood shaped by sea and time carries within it a particular kind of history. Finished with oil and acrylic paint, the timber is mounted on the front of non-reflective glass with no backing board, so it appears to float freely — a streak of organic form and colour hovering in space, like something that has just arrived.

Framed and ready to hang, Meteor brings the character of the New Zealand coast indoors in a form that is entirely its own — original, one of a kind, and unlike anything else on a wall.
