Pootle is an original sculpture by New Zealand artist John Allen, made from pōhutukawa roots reclaimed from fallen trees in the Auckland region.
Its name is a nod to Pooh Bear - the resemblance is in their posture. Like Pooh, Pootle is round, soft and unhurried, resting, in his own gentle way, easily content and never in a rush to be anywhere but where he already is.
The pōhutukawa roots' natural grain, contours and character remain central to the finished work. An oil-and-wax finish enriches the timber's colour and grain while preserving its distinctly organic presence.
