The waka paddle is one of the most elemental forms in Aotearoa — a tool of navigation, of connection, of crossing water. Waka Paddle 1 (2023) by New Zealand artist John Allen honours that form in its most natural expression: shaped from pōhutukawa root salvaged from a fallen tree in Northland, finished in oil and wax, and fitted with an integrated LED light that illuminates the wall behind it with a warm, living glow.
At 1200mm, this is a commanding presence on any wall. The pōhutukawa root brings its own story — one of New Zealand’s most beloved native trees, its timber dense and characterful, shaped by decades of growth before arriving in the studio. The natural form of the root is preserved and celebrated rather than imposed upon, so the paddle retains the organic irregularity of the tree itself. No two are alike.
Waka Paddle 1 is a unique ambient wall sculpture that draws on the deep cultural heritage of Aotearoa. It is both object and atmosphere — by day a sculptural work of quiet authority, by night a source of warm, directional light. An exceptional piece for a home, a gallery, or as a gift of real meaning.
Available for viewing at Turua Gallery, St Heliers, Auckland.
